COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY

A CT scan has many advantages for diagnosing exotic pets. In case of small animals with filigree bone structures in particular, a lot more information can be extracted from a CT compared with an x-ray image. In dentistry, especially in rodents and rabbits, imaging with CT is preferable to X-rays. Depending on the species, general anesthesia is often not required, only sedation or in some cases it can even be carried out while awake.

Example rabbit skull

Here is an example of a three-dimensional reconstruction of a rabbit skull from a CT scan. In contrast to X-rays, the fine structures can be isolated and assessed without overlay.
